1. It started with cardio. Long before she claimed the UFC title with a kick that downed champ Ronda Rosey, Holm was just looking to stay fit between soccer seasons when she gave cardio kickboxing a try at age 16. That turned into sparring and, eventually, a successful pro boxing career. Holm taught cardio kickboxing classes for yeas in her hometown of Albuquerque, N.M.
2. Locked in the upright position. Holm has not been taken down in any of her first three UFC bouts. According to the stats service FightMetric, Holm spent 96.8% of those matches from the standing position, 3% atop the other fighter and 0.2% below the other fighter.
3. Not just “The Preacher’s Daughter.” Holm’s father is a longtime preacher at Edgewood Church of Christ in Albuquerque, hence her nickname, “The Preacher’s Daughter.” But she was once known as “Nay Nay” — a derivative for her middle name, Rene — as a child.
4. Holly Holm Day. After her shocking win against Rousey, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez announced that Dec. 6, 2015, would be known as “Holly Holm Day” in the state. An estimated crowd of 20,000 turned out in Albuquerque for the “Holmcoming” parade.
5. Delayed debut. Holm broke her arm in her final fight for Legacy Fighting Championship in April 2014. That pushed back her UFC debut a few months, although she was all set to fight Raquel Pennington in December of that year. Less than a month before the fight, she was forced to withdraw after a neck injury she sustained during training. Her fight against Pennington was rescheduled for February 2015, a bout Holm won via a split decision.

1. Rasslin’ time. Tate joined the Franklin Pierce High (Tacoma, Wash.) boy’s wrestling team as a freshman. While she said the coach wasn’t initially keen on having Tate on a team filled with boys, she developed into a standout. Tate won the Washington state girls high school championship — and her team’s coach’s award — as a senior.
2. Takedown master. Tate has 25 takedowns, the most by any UFC women’s bantamweight fighter. (The stats include her fights in Strikeforce, an organization UFC absorbed.) The only fight of her 14 in UFC/Strikeforce she failed to complete at least one takedown was against Sara McMann at UFC 183 in January 2015, a bout Tate won via a decision.
3. It’s not broken. It certainly didn’t look good after Ronda Rousey contorted Tate’s left arm into a shape it shouldn’t have been in when the two first faced each other in March 2012. The injury was immediately reported as a broken arm, but soon after Tate said that Rousey’s trademark armbar instead tore several ligaments in her arm.
